英語or的是一個常用的連詞。初學者一見or往往就譯為"或是"，殊不知它的譯法很多，試就常見者舉例加以說明：

一、 表示"二者居一"、"非此即彼"，或"數(shù)個事物中的任何一個"。

常譯為"或"、"或是"、"還是"等。例如：

1、 Static electricity is caused by lightning or by certain electrical machines that give off electromagnetic waves. 靜電是由閃電或某些產(chǎn)生電磁波的電機產(chǎn)生的。

2、 Is this material a conductor or an insulator？這種材料是導(dǎo)體，還是絕緣體？

二、 表示事物的另一種。

常常是更詳細、更名確或更通俗、更簡潔的說法。常譯為"或稱"、"換言之"、"也就是"、"即"等。例如：

1、 Fire is a chemical action, or an action taking place between different chemical substances. 火是一種化學反應(yīng)，或者說，是發(fā)生在不同化學物質(zhì)間的一種作用。

2、 We will start with a cubic inch of hydrogen at atmosphere pressure (or the air pressure at the earth's surface). 我們從大氣壓力（即地球表面的空氣壓力）下的一立方英寸氫氣開始。

3、 The study of the insides of atoms, or of atomic nuclei, called nuclear science, or nucleonics. 對原子內(nèi)部或原子核的研究稱作核科學，或稱核子學。

三、 不表示"二者居一"，而表示"二者均可"。

這時可譯為"和"。例如：

The digital computer, in its computation section, can do mainly two things-add or substract. 數(shù)字計算機的運算部分主要有兩項功能：加和減。

四、 有時可不譯出。

一事物在英語中有兩個名稱，而在漢語中只有一個，或者為了漢語行文簡潔，在不影響句意的情況下，均可不譯。例如：

1、 The camshaft has a cam, on which there is a lob, or bump. 凸輪軸上有一個凸輪，凸輪上有一個凸角。

2、 So the amount of position waves pile up in front of the wings and fuselage, or body, of the plane. 這樣，壓縮波就堆積在機翼和機身的前面。

3、 If the amount of positive and negative charges is varied, the electron stream can be made to bend up or down in varying amounts.如果正負電荷的量發(fā)生變化，電子流上下彎曲的程度也隨之變化。

五、 表示前一動作如不發(fā)生，則后一動作或情況就要出現(xiàn)。

這時or常譯作"否則"、"不然就"等。例如：

You have to open the switch right away or (else) the fuse will be burned off. 你必須把開關(guān)立即關(guān)掉，否則保險絲就會燒斷。

有時，or前后說的是兩種相互對照的情況，這時，可譯為"反之"。

An object is said to be hot if its temperature is much higher than that of our bodies or cold if its temperature is much lower. 一物體比人體體溫高得多時，我們說，該物體是熱的；反之，該物體比人體體溫低得多時，它就是冷的。
